MENOPAUSE HORMONE THERAPY

Understanding your hormones, restoring your balance

WHAT ARE 'BIOIDENTICAL' HORMONES?

Bioidentical hormones are hormones that have the same molecular structure as the ones your body naturally makes. Older hormone therapies used synthetic forms that weren’t identical to human hormones, which led to side effects and confusion about safety. Today, bioidentical hormones allow us to restore balance more precisely — using forms your body recognizes.

WHAT'S HAPPENING DURING PERIMENOPAUSE?

During the years leading up to menopause, ovulation becomes irregular. That means progesterone levels fall first, while estrogen levels fluctuate wildly — sometimes high, sometimes low. This hormonal rollercoaster can cause hot flashes, anxiety, breast tenderness, heavy periods, mood swings, and sleep changes. As estrogen production eventually declines, the drop affects brain function, metabolism, bone strength, and even gut balance which is why so many symptoms feel “whole-body".

WHERE DOES TESTOSTERONE FIT IN?

While testosterone is thought of as a “male” hormone, women produce it too — and levels naturally decline with age. Some women may benefit from small, carefully dosed amounts to help with low libido, fatigue, motivation, or muscle loss. Because there’s no FDA-approved testosterone product for women, we use compounded topical gels when indicated, always at physiologic doses and with close monitoring.

DON'T FORGET THE THYROID

Thyroid hormones regulate energy, weight, mood, and temperature — and many perimenopausal symptoms overlap with thyroid dysfunction. Unfortunately, most routine testing only includes TSH, which doesn’t always give the full picture. We include free T4, free T3, and thyroid antibodies when appropriate to ensure we don’t miss a contributing thyroid issue. If replacement is needed, we may prescribe T4 (levothyroxine) alone or a combination of T4 and T3, since T3 is the active hormone your cells use.
